Stockmen’s Spring Roundups set for June 4-5, 7-8 and 11-12
The North Dakota Stockmen’s Association (NDSA) will host its 2018 Spring Roundup series, “Our Priority, Your Business; Our Focus, Your Future,” June 4-5, 7-8 and 11-12 in Eldridge, Sterling, Mott, Maddock, Minot and Watford City, N.D. The Spring Roundups serve as the organization’s district meetings, and each will include a social, supper, informational program, NDSA Nominating Committee meeting and local brand inspectors meeting.
In each location, the brand inspectors meeting begins at 5 p.m., with the social at 5:30 p.m., the supper at 6:30 p.m. and the program and Nominating Committee meeting following. All times are local.
“The Roundups are designed to bring the organization to its members — to provide information to the state’s cattle producers and to gather their valuable input to help set the NDSA’s direction,” said NDSA President Warren Zenker, a Gackle-N.D., cattleman and feeder. “I encourage all of our grassroots members to attend these Roundups to learn more about the NDSA’s recent work, to offer their feedback and to enjoy a relaxing evening with old and new friends.”
The Spring Roundup schedule and details are as follows:
District 1
The District 1 Spring Roundup will be held at the Maddock Opera House above Harriman’s Restaurant in Maddock, N.D. The program will include Zenker and NDSA Executive Vice President Julie Ellingson, who will discuss the NDSA’s recent work; Jerry Doan, last year’s National Cattlemen’s Beef Association Environmental Stewardship Award winner, who will highlight some of the conservation-related practices his family uses on its McKenzie, N.D., ranch and offer some drought planning tips; and Travis Maddock, who will report on the North Dakota Beef Commission and its checkoff-funded work. Garrett Dockter will also provide musical entertainment.
The District 1 Spring Roundup is being hosted by District Chairman Justin Maddock of Maddock, N.D.
District 2
The District 2 Spring Roundup will be held at the Boondocks, near Eldridge, N.D. To get to the Boondocks from I-94, take Exit 251 (the Eldridge exit) and then the west frontage road.
Follow the curve, then go straight south for 10 miles. To get to the Boondocks from Highway 281, head south for 11 miles and then take a right onto 47th Street. Go seven miles west and one mile north. The Boondocks will be on the left (west) side. The mailbox has “Michel” on it.
The program will include Zenker, Ellingson, Maddock and Dr. Greg Lardy, North Dakota State University (NDSU) Department of Animal Sciences head, who will explain how NDSU and the NDSA work together and give an update on the new Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory.
The District 2 Spring Roundup is being hosted by District Chairman Gene Heinrich of Medina, N.D.
District 3
The District 3 Spring Roundup will be held at Flash’s Place in Sterling, N.D. The program will include Zenker; Ellingson; Maddock, who will provide a meat-cutting demonstration; and Dr. Gary Sides, who will present “The Truth about our Food, Beef and Growth Technologies.”
Sides, who resides in Sterling, Colo., is a beef cattle nutritionist on the Zoetis technical services team. He has 30 years of experience, working with organizations such as Intervet, Cargill Animal Nutrition, Moorman Manufacturing Company, Texas A&M and Utah State University. Sides has co-authored numerous papers and technical bulletins on estrus synchronization, feedlot growth promotion, effects of antimicrobials on feedlot health and performance and parasite control, among other topics.
The District 3 Spring Roundup is being hosted by District Chairman Lowell Malard of Bismarck, N.D.
District 4
The District 4 Spring Roundup will be held at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Mott, N.D. The program will include Zenker, Ellingson and a special historical presentation, “50 Years of Covering the North Dakota Cattle Industry,” by long-time North Dakota television newsmen Al Gustin and Dwayne Walker.
The District 4 Spring Roundup is being hosted by Gustin, the district chairman, of Mandan, N.D.
District 5
The District 5 Spring Roundup will be held at the Roughrider Center in Watford City, N.D. The program will include Zenker and Ellingson.
The District 5 Spring Roundup is being hosted by District Chairman Howdy Lawlar of Watford City, N.D.
District 6
The District 6 Spring Roundup will be held at the Knights of Columbus Club in Minot, N.D. The program will include Zenker, Ellingson and Nancy Jo Bateman, North Dakota Beef Commission executive director, who will highlight checkoff-related projects.
The District 6 Spring Roundup is being hosted by District Chairman Shane Anderson of Towner, N.D.
